The Venator Brutus class was created out of necessity. Old mothballed Venators, that could be moved, were directed to the Mon Calmari system for retrofit. The ships were stripped down and the hulls strengthened, old systems were upgraded and newer installed where needed. Realizing that the Venators were outclassed in direct combat with the new Imperial ships, they were refitted as assault carriers delivering alliance ground forces where ever needed. The class received retrofitted hangar bays for landing craft, and weapons systems designed for ground support as well as direct combat were increased. But this all comes at a cost. The frames of these ships are old therefore engine capacity was reduced resulting in a slower, less maneuverable vessel. The vessel can carry an entire regiment plus it's necessary equipment , but does not have dedicated fighter support. It is considered an army asset, thus has wing commander and flight command team. The commmander is not a naval officer but a general of land forces. The high squadron number is the result of the large number of landing support required.
